Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted he is surprised Jose Mourinho is still at the club following their heavy defeat at West Ham on Saturday.

The Portuguese manager finds himself under intense pressure after United suffered their worst start to a season for 29 years and cracks continue to appear between the manager and his players.

Scholes, who represented United for almost 20 years in the heart of their midfield, was fiercely critical of United's manager and admitted he was surprised he was still in a job.

'I think it's a bad situation. I'm actually sat here surprised that he survived after after Saturday as the performance was that bad,' Scholes said on BT Sport ahead of the Champions League game against Valencia.

'It was nowhere near. And he has come out in press conferences and he's constantly having a go at players.

'He's having a go at those above him because he's not getting what he wants and I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he's embarrassing the club.'

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand also criticised Mourinho, claiming his downbeat demeanour is affecting performances on the pitch.

He added: 'There's not a work ethic. The attitude doesn't seem right. No one's said about not going out there to win - people want to win football matches. If you could win it easily you would.

'Football's not easy, you have to work hard. That's a basic trait of any footballer or any team to be successful they have to have. And this team doesn't have that, and where does that come from, like I said at the weekend, that comes from and is driven by one person at the top, the manager. It falls at his feet.’
