Manchester United were outplayed and outclassed as they crashed out of the Champions League to Sevilla.
United were sloppy and slow for much of the match, allowing the Spanish side to grow in confidence as the game continued to draw on.
With the first leg having ended 0-0, Mourinho’s players needed to ensure they don’t concede and outscore their opponents at Old Trafford.
Sevilla continued to look dangerous though on the break and from one superb move they took the lead. Ben Yedder had only been on the pitch two minutes when he slid home from inside the box. And four minutes later he got his second as David De Gea flapped at a far-post effort.
Mourinho responded by sending on Juan Mata and Anthony Martial for Lingard and Valencia. To make matters worse, they then conceded once more to really rub salt in the players’ wounds as supporters failed to grasp what was happening in front of their eyes.
Romelu Lukaku pulled one back to spark a late fightback, but it was too little too late on a night when United paid for defensive hesitancy. With the Premier League title already heading to the Etihad, it leaves United needing to lift the FA Cup to ensure some silverware in Mourinho’s second season in charge.
